The Idukki hills have turned a stunning shade of blue with the rare bloom of Mettukurinji (Strobilanthes sessilis), a species of Kurinji that flowers every seven years at elevations between 600 and 1,000 meters. Unlike Neelakurinji, which has a 12-year flowering cycle, Mettukurinji blooms more frequently and lacks petioles. There are three distinct varieties of this plant found in the Western Ghats. The bloom has attracted a significant number of tourists to the Kalyanathandu hill and Parunthumpara Eagle Rock, prompting experts to emphasize the importance of preserving this rare species. The viiew of the Idukki dam reservoir combined with the blooming Neelakurinji in Kalyanathandu has particularly drawn visitors to the area near Nirmala city in Kattappana. The flowering is expected to last for about three weeks, as long as it isn't disrupted by heavy rainfall.
