Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is notable for its unique thorny scrub forest and xerophytic species. Located in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats, it receives less than two months of rainfall annually. This sanctuary is a crucial habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India, with fewer than 200 individuals remaining. The sanctuary’s mixed deciduous forests are ideal for trekking, offering sightings of various wildlife such as gaur, elephants, spotted deer, sambur, hanuman langur, and peacocks.
Thoovanam Falls: Within the sanctuary lies Thoovanam Falls, a beautiful waterfall originating from the river Pambar. The trek to the falls starts at the Alampatty forest station, requiring an entry ticket and a guide. This one-hour trek offers opportunities to see wildlife and enjoy the diverse flora. The falls are a year-round attraction, especially breathtaking after the monsoon season.
