KUMARAKOM
( A Treasure Trove of Rustic Experiences)
Kumarakom is a true paradise: a maze of backwaters with glistening water, the vivid green of mangrove forests, coconut trees line the embankments, azure skies, and thousands of migrating birds skimming the water! Over seven million tourists travel to Kerala each year; the National Geographic Magazine has deemed it one of the must-see destinations of a lifetime. For most of these tourists, Kumarakom is a significant stopover. Scattered throughout the eastern shores of Lake Vembanad is this well-known backwater destination for tourists. The lake reaches its maximum length and width of approximately eight kilometers close to Kumarakom, in comparison to the other settlements. Situated on one side of a massive lake and traversed by a system of serene canals, Kumarakom is a man-made marvel that occupies a special place on the Kerala map.
Geographic and Demographic Details:
Part of Kerala's rice bowl, Kuttanad, is just a few feet below sea level and includes Kumarakom. Scattered islets, almost 14 kilometers away from Kottayam this is. This intriguing place can be reached in two hours by car from the Cochin International Airport or in thirty minutes by boat from Muhamma in the Alappuzha district.
The community covers 51.67 square kilometers, including the 24.13 square kilometers that make up the lake. The 15.75 sq km of verdant paddy fields below sea level are dispersed over this area. There is dry ground on the remaining 1253 hectares. This about 1179-hectare inhabited region is made up of patches of land that are intersected by streams and canals.
